Competition watchdog probes complaints over sudden heating oil price hikes

Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, said: “There is no room for profiteering while global tensions push oil prices up.

“Households that rely on heating oil have no protection from the energy price cap, so when global fossil fuel markets spike they feel the impact almost immediately.

“Around 1.5 million UK homes depend on heating oil and many are already among those facing the deepest fuel poverty.

“If prices continue to surge, the Government may need to consider urgent support for homes off the gas grid, but it must be easier to access than schemes introduced during the last crisis and faster to get to the households affected.

“But this situation also highlights the longer-term challenge.

“Leaving households exposed to volatile fossil fuel markets is not sustainable.

“Warmer homes, better insulation and a transition to cleaner heating such as heat pumps and heat networks are the lasting way to protect families from future price shocks.”
