Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, said: “The Prime Minister’s announcement of £53 million to help vulnerable households who rely on heating oil is a welcome recognition that these homes are among the most exposed to global price shocks. Fuels like heating oil are unregulated and bought in bulk, which means families can suddenly face bills of hundreds of pounds just to refill their tanks.
“Ministers should also ensure that help reaches other customers outside the Ofgem price cap, such as those living in park homes or care homes and those on heat networks, who can face similar cost pressures.
“Alongside financial support, the Government should also act on practical measures such as reducing minimum heating oil delivery amounts so households are not forced to find hundreds of pounds upfront, and ensuring vulnerable households are prioritised if supply pressures increase.
“At the same time, the longer-term solution must be helping these homes move away from expensive fossil fuels through insulation, alternative heating systems, heat pumps and community energy so households are not repeatedly exposed to global energy shocks.
“We would also urge Ministers to talk to charities, advice providers and experts now about the measures which may be needed from 1 July after the current price cap protection ends.”
