Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, said: “The official statistics only examine debt that is more than 90 days old, and the wider picture is much worse.
”Our own research found that around 31% of UK adults are currently in debt to their energy supplier or worried about falling behind, with the median debt among those in arrears standing at £750.
“These figures also capture the months before another 13.5% price rise lands. The question Ofgem must now answer is not just how bad the numbers are, but what it is going to do about them. We have been clear: mandatory debt referral standards, a public supplier performance dashboard, and a debt relief scheme funded by the price shock profiteers who caused this crisis, not by the households drowning in it.”
