Burnham announces new GB Grid in bid to bring energy costs down

More needs to be done now for households struggling with energy bills after Andy Burnham announced plans for a publicly owned “Great British Grid”, experts have said.

The Prime Minister announced plans to create GB Grid – a new body under the Great British Energy umbrella – in his speech at the Labour Party conference.

The hope is that it will bring UK energy costs down in line with European nations within 10 years.

Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, said: “Greater public control of the grid is a step in the right direction, but it will only matter to families if it cuts their bills.

“Households cannot wait 10 years for relief, so this must come alongside emergency support for those struggling now.

“GB Grid should be the start of a wider shift in making the energy system work for households who are facing a sixth winter of high bills. That further reforms to the cost of electricity and a faster roll out of the Warm Homes Plan to help households improve energy efficiency.”
