Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said: “AMD gave investors something more solid than AI hype to latch onto, and that helps explain the sharp after-hours move.
“First-quarter revenue and earnings both beat expectations, while the outlook for the current quarter was even more impressive.
“The real engine was Datacenter, where server CPUs continued to grow strongly, and management pointed to another step-up in the coming quarter.
“The AMD story is no longer just about having a GPU pipeline to challenge Nvidia.
“It’s increasingly about a broader compute opportunity, with CPUs and GPUs both playing a role as AI workloads become more demanding.
“The market reaction also reflects a shift in confidence.
“AMD has had plenty of excitement around AI before, but the fundamental story is now starting to look more real, helped by a larger addressable market, stronger product positioning (with CPUs back in the limelight), and an expected GPU ramp with OpenAI and Meta later this year.
“There are still risks, including execution on the Helios ramp, supply, customer concentration, second-half PC demand, and whether AI spending can keep growing at this pace.
“But after a beat, a stronger guide and rising earnings expectations, investors appear more willing to give AMD credit for being a serious beneficiary of the AI buildout, rather than just a hopeful challenger.”
