Andrew Prosser, head of investments at InvestEngine, said: “Just over a year ago, the newly elected Labour Government scrapped the Conservatives’ plans for a UK ISA which would have created an additional ISA allowance to invest specifically in UK equities.
“We now find ourselves in a similar position, with the current Government mulling a minimum holding of UK companies in its attempt to get more people to support British business and incentivise investment in the UK.
“But pushing people into UK-only equities is the wrong approach. Investors should be empowered to choose what’s right for their goals, not made to carry the burden of propping up UK PLC.
“UK equities already make up a good chunk of ISA portfolios – investors shouldn’t be forced into investing patriotically but instead should be encouraged to invest in a global and diversified way.
“This is key to long-term financial growth.”
