ADHD linked to thinking and memory problems in later life

Barny Guthrie, chief executive at mental health services provider Clinical Partners, insists the UK needs to “establish long-term outcome registries for mental health” after a study showed adults with ADHD could be more likely to have memory and thinking problems in later life.

He said: “A range of factors are likely to affect cognitive function in people with ADHD, including medication, self-medication, psychosocial disadvantage, as well as physical conditions, such as sleep disorders.

“It’s also possible that people with ADHD might score lower on some cognitive tests because ADHD affects attention, memory and organisation.

“We at Clinical Partners are measuring patients’ functional and quality of life deficits and the difference treatment makes, but in the UK we need to establish long-term outcome registries for mental health so that we can track the impact of conditions and services over time nationally.”
