Biography

Karen is head of policy at Marie Collins Foundation and specialises in child safeguarding law, online safety and policy responses to technology-assisted child sexual abuse.

She provides expert analysis of legislation, regulation and public policy affecting children’s safety online and offline.

A lawyer by profession, Karen holds a Master’s degree with distinction in international safeguarding, combining law, criminal justice, abuse investigation and social work.

Her specialist interests include intrafamilial child sexual abuse, disclosure, online grooming and the pathways between online and offline offending.

Karen previously developed and delivered child-safeguarding education for an international medical NGO in North Africa. The materials were subsequently translated for use in other countries, including India and Uzbekistan.

She later became the global safeguarding lead for a large international NGO, leading a multicultural team responding to safeguarding allegations across jurisdictions and liaising with agencies including the FBI, INTERPOL and the UK National Crime Agency.

Karen has also led inquiries into non-recent abuse, examining organisational practice, governance, safeguarding protocols and remedial measures.
