As average diesel prices reached £2 a litre for the first time in the UK, Iain Reid, global content director at Carwow believes higher fuel prices could be the reason as to why more people are buying electric vehicles.
He said: “With diesel now edging towards £2 a litre, it’s no surprise to see more drivers looking at electric cars as a way to keep their running costs under control. Our data shows EVs now account for 41 per cent of enquiries on Carwow, up 14 per cent in just a week as fuel prices have risen.
“But this isn’t simply a knee-jerk reaction to higher pump prices. We’re seeing a much broader shift in attitudes towards electric cars, with 38 per cent of drivers now saying they would consider an EV for their next car, compared with 26 per cent in 2024. At the same time, concerns are falling across the board, with worries about range, charging and cost all significantly lower than they were two years ago.
“For drivers who are interested in making the switch but aren’t ready to commit to buying an EV outright, leasing can also offer a way to try electric motoring without taking on the same concerns around depreciation. Ultimately, with more models to choose from and running costs becoming an increasingly important consideration, drivers have more ways than ever to find an EV that works for their needs.”
