UK needs ‘watertight’ cyber defences, says minister after Australia OpenAI hack

Beverley Griffiths, senior lecturer in security and resilience at Bucks New University, believes AI cyber incidents are an organisational resilience challenge as much as a technology problem after Labour deputy leader Lucy Powell said the UK needs ‘watertight’ defences.

She said: “The emergence of AI-enabled cyber incidents should not be viewed solely as a technology problem; it’s an organisational resilience challenge.

“Autonomous systems let attacks move with greater speed, scale and persistence than traditional methods, so organisations need to rethink how they anticipate, monitor and manage risk.

“The most resilient organisations combine strong cybersecurity controls with effective governance, incident management and organisational learning.

“Rather than asking only whether an attack can be prevented, they ask how quickly abnormal activity is detected, how well services are maintained during disruption, and how lessons are captured to strengthen future preparedness.

“This case also underlines the importance of transparency and timely reporting. In an interconnected digital environment, early notification supports collective learning and coordinated response. As AI develops, resilience must become central to both AI governance and cyber security strategy.”
