Former rural affairs secretary appointed to ‘important’ fishing sector job

Hugo Tagholm, executive director at Oceana UK, is hoping Mairi Gougeon can have a positive impact on Scotland’s fishing sector.

He said: “This is a powerful position at the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation for the recent former Minister Mairi Gougeon.

“We hope she grasps the opportunity to contribute positively to the future of Scotland’s seas.

“SFF hold a significant proportion of Scotland’s fishing quota – and could be a strong voice for science-led fishing that rebuilds abundance and safeguards fish stocks for generations to come.

“Ms Gougeon will know from her time in government that many Scottish fish stocks are in grave danger from overfishing. This in turn threatens the future of the fishing industry itself.”
