Hugo Tagholm, executive director at Oceana UK, said: “The UK Government has finally stepped up to the plate and ratified the High Seas Treaty – this is great news.
“The high seas matter. They are the beating heart of a healthy ocean that in turn gives us a stable climate, food to eat, and livelihoods around the world.
“The UK was late to the party, so it must now make its presence felt in implementation. Now is the time to put real protection in place.
“Historically, the high seas have been a lawless and vicious place where we rampantly overfish; dump our rubbish; and turn a blind eye to abuse. That must urgently change as we work to meet our commitment to protecting 30 per cent of our ocean by 2030.
“In seas both near and far, domestic and international, we need true marine protected areas that act as havens for nature and powerhouses of planetary resilience.”
