Burnham announces new GB Grid in bid to bring energy costs down

Tessa Khan, executive director at Uplift, insists the government need to take power away from the oil and gas profiteers.

She said: “The PM is right to focus on ramping up electrification as the only way to bring down energy costs, as well as tackling climate change, which is now putting financial burdens on ordinary people, businesses and the UK economy.

“Our reliance on volatile oil and gas is why bills have spiked over recent years, driven by conflicts overseas over which we have no control. New drilling in the North Sea will do nothing to lower prices or boost our energy security – most of what’s left is oil, the vast majority of which is exported by the oil giants that own it.

“More urgent action is needed now from this government, including support for those who will struggle with energy bills this winter and measures to ensure every household can benefit from the shift to clean power, including upgrading homes with insulation, heat pumps and solar power.

“Ultimately, this government needs to go further and faster in taking power away from the oil and gas profiteers, who are making billions at our expense, and putting the UK on a path to a clean energy system that we control.”
