Robert Palmer, deputy director at Uplift, said: “The public is watching in horror as wildfires wreak devastation here and abroad – forcing hundreds of thousands from their homes, sending holidaymakers fleeing, destroying crops and killing wildlife.
“Yet, at this very moment, politicians in the UK are contemplating opening the door to more oil and gas drilling – the thing driving this crisis. Instead of facing the reality unfolding before their eyes, they are choosing to listen to the fossil fuel lobby and its biggest cheerleader, Donald Trump.
“The science is clear – the world already has far more oil and gas than can ever be safely burned if we are to limit global warming. A new field on the scale of Rosebank is fundamentally incompatible with a safe climate.
“Every new oil and gas field approved today makes us more complicit in the devastation and deaths caused by climate change. The first duty of any government is to keep people safe. Choosing to press ahead with Rosebank would be a cowardly dereliction of that duty.”
