Malcolm Che, head of innovation at Identity, gives his thoughts on AI after Andy Burnham welcomed the focus from AI bosses on the risks of emerging technology.
He said: “Innovation is always sold to us as democratising technology. Democracy has two parts. People get asked what they want, and someone answers for it when it goes wrong. Neither is happening here.
“Nobody asked the public for models that improve themselves. Nobody asked whether the ones we already have are enough for what people actually wanted from them. That question has not been put, because sufficiency is bad for valuations.
“Social media democratised publishing and removed the publisher’s accountability at the same time. Twenty years of measurable harm followed, and the people who built it answered for none of it.
“Pace is a second-order question. Decide who is answerable first, then argue about speed. Otherwise we get the same settlement as last time, with more capable systems and nobody to hold to it.”
