Andy Burnham’s Innovation Nation Summit speech is ‘encouraging’ for clinical research sector

Rosalind Campion, chief executive of the Academy of Medical Sciences, said: “The Prime Minster’s speech at today’s Innovation Nation Summit is an encouraging sign that the government sees research and innovation as central to growth and national renewal. Becoming the world’s leading innovation nation is a goal worth chasing, and medical research gives the UK a head start.

“Strong regional innovation ecosystems have a vital role to play, but they must complement, rather than fragment, a nationally connected research and innovation system. With the £1bn for clusters reportedly coming from UKRI’s existing budget, the upcoming Budget needs to protect funding for discovery and clinical research and set out a plan to rebuild the clinical academic workforce.

“Clinical academics are the people who run trials and turn discoveries into treatments. The commitment to make dementia research a national priority, with Government and industry investing together to get more people into trials, shows what’s possible when this work is properly backed. We look forward to working with government on how this is delivered.”
