Experts uncover potential cause of common type of stroke

Prof Roslyn Bill, professor of biotechnology and director of Aston Institute for Membrane Excellence at Aston University, said: “Strokes are typically understood to arise when blood vessels in the brain become blocked, depriving tissue of its crucial oxygen supply.

“However, emerging work suggests that an abnormal widening of arteries can also contribute to stroke risk by creating sluggish, turbulent blood flow and unstable vessel walls that promote clot formation.

“This shift of focus from simple narrowing to a broader view of vascular dysfunction highlights a role for altered blood flow and wall integrity.

“Targeting these changes in dilated arteries may therefore offer new avenues for preventing stroke.”
