-EducationApprenticeships

13,000 more young people able to train as plumbers, bricklayers and engineers

David Parry, senior parliamentary and public affairs officer at the Chartered Institute of Building, said: “Construction is traditionally reliant on apprenticeships but faces one of the most acute skills shortages in the UK economy with an estimated additional 240,000 workers needed by 2029 just to meet demand.

“Ensuring more employers, such as those involved with the construction of schools, create opportunities for apprentices is a welcome move.

“However, while the government has clearly recognised the urgency of the construction skills shortage and made targeted investments through Skills Bootcamps, Technical Excellence Colleges, and infrastructure commitments, these efforts need to be sold to those making career choices as translating interest into apprenticeship starts remains a big challenge.

“Apprenticeships and training systems are not working as effectively as they should; completion rates are low and funding systems overly complex.

“As a provider of construction apprenticeships ourselves and End Point Assessors for Level 3, Level 4 and Level 6 apprenticeships, we regularly hear how the apprentices get a strong sense of pride, legacy and community from working in the construction sector.

“They enjoy the varied nature of an industry where no two days are the same, plus the chance to earn a wage while learning and building a career that offers wide opportunities for growth.

“With so many built environment roles now requiring skills in digital innovation and sustainability, which we know appeal to young people, we need to harness this opportunity via a long-term coordinated strategy including a national campaign to inspire a new generation of construction professionals.

“It’s vital however that swift action is taken to build the workforce capacity required to deliver the UK’s infrastructure, housing and net zero ambitions.”
