Blood test ‘can predict dementia risk in women 25 years before symptoms appear’

Dr Sonya Miller, medical director at TauRx Therapeutics Management, said: “It is extremely important we observe longitudinal studies over several decades to really gain an understanding of the at-risk profiles for development of Alzheimer’s disease.

“Along with the understanding and management of the lifestyle risk factors, early and accurate blood biomarker testing can help clinicians, patients and their families regain some control over this devastating disease.

“After the initial hype about their utility in clinical practice, it’s clear there is now increasing discussion among industry about the relevance of blood biomarkers when it comes to pre-symptomatic Alzheimer’s disease.

“There is concern about delivering a biomarker diagnosis before any symptoms have been confirmed, and the implications that has for the person and their family.

“As an industry we need to be careful of the clinical implications and take a considered approach to their use, but studies like this can only be a positive step.”
