“Awareness, education and action are crucial” in tackling dementia, experts have said.
A new survey from Alzheimer’s Society has revealed that a quarter of over 40s in the UK cannot name one preventable dementia risk factor.
Around 982,000 people are estimated to be living with dementia in the UK, with a third yet to have a formal diagnosis.
Dr Sonya Miller, medical director at TauRx Therapeutics Management, said: “Everyone needs to treat their brain health in the same way they do their pensions – by taking heed and acting now, they will be better prepared for what could happen in the future.
“It is still surprising that in general, people are unaware of how their lifestyle choices impact not just their physical health, but also their brain health.
“Simple steps to optimise your body and brain health can lead to meaningful reductions in risk for developing conditions such as dementia in later life.
“Many people would also be surprised to know that dementia is the leading cause of death in the UK.
“Awareness, education and action are crucial in tackling what has become a serious health and social problem. All of us can be affected. All of us can take steps to minimise our risks.”
