Blood test could detect signs of Alzheimer’s ‘decades before symptoms’ – study

Dr Sonya Miller, medical director at TauRx Therapeutics Management, said: “After the initial hype about their utility in clinical practice, it’s clear there is now increasing discussion among industry about the relevance of blood biomarkers when it comes to pre-symptomatic Alzheimer’s disease.

“There is concern about delivering a blood biomarker diagnosis before any symptoms have been confirmed and the implications this has for the person and their family, so we need to be careful of the clinical implications and take a considered approach to their use.

“That said, studies like this can only be a positive step in helping the millions of people impacted by Alzheimer’s. Along with potential treatments currently going through the regulatory process, they provide hope that we can do something to alter its impact.

“Tests like this could help reduce waiting times, increase access to treatments for those that need them most, and help reduce the economic burden on our social care system.”
