City watchdog sets out moves to boost retail investment in shares

Maike Currie, vice president of personal finance at PensionBee, said: “For too long, the UK has cocooned retail investors in regulatory cotton wool, unintentionally fostering a mindset where risk is avoided rather than understood.

“Yet the bigger danger is often inaction: inflation quietly erodes cash over time, and many delay saving into a pension for fear of ‘getting it wrong’.

“The FCA’s proposals signal a welcome and necessary shift. Clearer disclosures and simpler, more proportionate risk warnings can help move consumers away from fear-driven decision-making and towards informed participation.

“‘Capital at risk’ statements already apply to most UK pensions because pensions are, fundamentally, long-term investments.

“While their value can go down as well as up, diversification across assets and geographies, combined with long time horizons, means they are designed to recover and grow.

“At PensionBee, we make risk transparent across our range of plans – from higher-risk equity strategies to balanced options and lower-risk fixed-income plans – so savers can choose what suits their goals and comfort level.

“This is the kind of clarity that empowers rather than deters.

“Britain has a significant opportunity to tackle one of its most persistent financial challenges: the chronic under-participation of retail investors.

“Smarter disclosures and clearer distinctions between investor types can rebuild a responsible investment culture – one where consumers feel able, willing and genuinely invited to share in long-term growth.”
