# Winter fuel payment scam warning for pensioners as payments start being made

By Simon Francis — 2025-11-12

Simon Francis, coordinator at End Fuel Poverty Coalition, said: “It is welcome that winter fuel payments are now reaching pensioners and that ministers have rightly reversed course and restored support for the vast majority who rely on it.

“But this saga must be a lesson. Pensioners – and other groups who rely on energy to stay safe and well – should never again be left worrying about how they will heat their homes.

“We still need long-term solutions to the energy bills crisis which is now entering its fifth winter.

“That means targeted financial support for households most at risk, alongside a fully funded programme of home insulation and energy efficiency upgrades so people are not forced to rely on emergency payments each year, and fundamental reform of the energy market so bills come down for good.

“Scam messages are another huge concern for those who work on the front line of fuel poverty.

“We have seen criminal groups try to take advantage of both the Winter Fuel Payment and Warm Homes Discount schemes.

“Our advice is never to click on an unexpected link – especially in a text message.

“If people want to check if they are eligible for support, they can call official government helplines, contact their energy firm or get support from respected charities.”
