# Government must tackle high electricity prices in Budget, industry experts say

By Simon Francis — 2025-11-19

Simon Francis, coordinator at End Fuel Poverty Coalition, said: “Ministers cannot unlock clean heat, cut bills or deliver energy security without tackling the fundamental unfairness in our energy pricing system.

“Electricity remains far too expensive compared with gas, and standing charges have spiralled to the point where low-income and vulnerable households are paying the highest price for a system they cannot afford and cannot opt out of.

“The Budget is the moment for government to act.

“That means shifting unfair policy and legacy costs off bills and into general taxation, cutting standing charges, and setting out a fully-funded Warm Homes Plan that makes it easy and affordable for every home to be insulated.

“Without these reforms, millions will remain trapped in cold, damp homes and the transition to clean, electric heating will stall before it has even begun.

“A fairer, more affordable energy system is entirely achievable and if the Chancellor is looking for options to fund these vital moves, she should consider that energy giants have generated over £125 billion in profits on their UK operations since the energy crisis started.”
