# BP puts its North Sea business up for sale after 60 years of production

By Simon Francis — 2026-07-31

Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, said: “BP’s potential exit from the North Sea lays bare the truth about the drill more, bill more brigade. These companies chase profit, not the national interest and when the resources and returns run dry they head for the door and leave workers and billpayers to pick up the pieces.

“The lesson from BP’s departure is not to hand any more tax breaks to an industry that continues to bank billions in profits every quarter, but to use Windfall Tax receipts to help households and clear the record energy debt households built up during the crisis.”
