# UK Government action could ‘unlock’ 100-plus oil and gas projects, say bosses

By Simon Francis — 2026-09-15

Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, said: “Oil and gas prices are surging ever higher, but once again the industry is requesting a tax cut in the middle of a war windfall.

“More than £6 billion in profits has been made on UK operations by a handful of firms since the conflict with Iran began, money that comes from higher bills in British homes.

“Voters across all parties and in all parts of the country back the Windfall Tax by a significant majority, because people can see who has done well out of the past five years and who has paid for it.

“Every pound given back to the price shock profiteers as a tax cut is a pound not spent clearing energy debt, insulating cold homes or reducing bills for the households who have carried the cost.”
