# Energy bills set to see biggest rise in four years in January, experts warn

By Simon Francis — 2026-09-30

Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, has urged ministers to prepare an Emergency Heat Tariff to cap the cost of heating this winter.

He said: “Another fresh crisis in energy bills is coming down the tracks and, once again, this is not of households’ making.

“Yet while people suffer, the energy industry posts billions in profits. The End Fuel Poverty Coalition has today written to Ministers advising them to plan for an ‘Emergency Heat Tariff’ and wider reductions in electricity bills.

“This additional support should be on top of more targeted support which we have already advised the Chancellor includes in the Budget, such as energy debt relief, expanded Warm Home Discount and reformed Cold Weather Payments.

“With the number of households in fuel poverty set to soar again and at the most dangerous time of the year, the Chancellor has no choice but to act to provide increased targeted support to vulnerable households and plan to deliver wider universal help for people facing a sixth winter of high energy prices.

“If ministers do nothing, millions will spend this winter in cold, damp homes, unable to cook a hot meal.”
