# Consumer confidence plunges among younger adults

By Dan Coatsworth — 2026-06-18

Dan Coatsworth, head of markets at AJ Bell, said: “While the headline reading of UK consumer confidence from GfK didn’t budge in June, that masked some worrying trends.

“Confidence among traditionally more optimistic young adults in the 16 to 29 age bracket fell materially, while no demographic groups currently have a positive score.

“The spotlight has been firmly placed on the prospects for younger Britons, with a recent report revealing more than a million young people are classed as NEETs (not in education, employment or training).

“As well as being a growing problem for the country’s economy, reduced consumer confidence in this age group could spell bad news for companies on the stock market who target their goods and services at them.

“These include trainers and tracksuits seller JD Sports, fast fashion names ASOS and Boohoo, LADbible owner LBG Media and The Gym Group.”
