# Quit attempts can be boosted with stop smoking apps – study

By Jamie Strachan — 2026-01-14

Jamie Strachan, operations director at VPZ | The Vaping Specialist, said: “This evidence highlights the value of expanding the stop-smoking toolkit, but it’s important that digital tools are seen as a complement to – not a replacement for – specialist support.

“Smartphone apps can help smokers stay motivated and engaged, particularly between touchpoints with services.

“However, many people attempting to quit still benefit from expert, in-person advice when choosing and using stop-smoking aids, including vaping products.

“Specialist retailers play a critical role in helping smokers transition away from cigarettes by providing tailored guidance, troubleshooting and ongoing reassurance that digital tools alone cannot replicate.

“For the NHS and public health teams, the most effective policy approach is an integrated one.

“Combining evidence-based apps with pharmacotherapy, behavioural support and access to trained vaping specialists creates a more joined-up pathway that reflects how people actually quit in the real world.

“If national digital support is rolled out, it should be designed to signpost smokers into local specialist services, not divert them away.

“Harnessing digital innovation alongside trusted, frontline expertise will be essential if the UK is to reduce smoking rates equitably and meet its smokefree ambitions.”
