# Choosing the best option for your savings

By Andrew Prosser — 2026-09-22

As it is BSA Savings Week, Andrew Prosser, head of investments at InvestEngine, looks at the options available.

He said: “It’s encouraging that 60 per cent of younger adults recognise the importance of building up cash savings before investing.

“Having an emergency buffer is an important foundation for financial resilience, but cash should be the start of the journey rather than necessarily the end of it.

“Once people have enough set aside for unexpected costs and short-term needs, it’s worth thinking about what their longer-term money could be doing.

“Saving and investing aren’t competing choices – for many people, cash provides the safety net while investing offers the potential to build wealth over the longer term.

“With inflation now at 3.1 per cent, it’s also important to make sure money isn’t simply sitting idle. Competitive savings rates can currently beat inflation, but people should consider whether keeping everything in cash is right for their longer-term goals.

“Building the confidence to move from saving to investing could be an important next step for many younger savers.”
