# SpaceX could end up being owned by companies that never chose to invest in it

Andrew Prosser, head of investments at InvestEngine, said: “The most interesting aspect of the SpaceX IPO isn’t necessarily what happens to the share price on day one, but how quickly many investors could end up owning the company through their ETFs.

“If SpaceX joins the Nasdaq-100 as expected, passive funds will need to buy the stock and trim existing holdings such as Apple and Nvidia to make room.

“Current estimates suggest SpaceX could account for around 0.4 per cent to 0.7 per cent of the index, meaning an investor with £100,000 in a Nasdaq-100 tracker could soon have approximately £400 to £700 invested in SpaceX without ever buying a share directly.

“That highlights the growing influence index investing has on markets, particularly when a company of this size comes to market.

“The biggest IPO in history may end up being owned by millions of investors who never actively chose to invest in it.

“Importantly, that’s not a flaw in the ETF model – it’s one of its strengths.

“Investors don’t need to predict which private company will become the next market leader or decide the perfect moment to buy.

“By tracking broad indices, ETFs automatically capture the companies that grow to become significant parts of the market, helping investors participate in long-term innovation while remaining diversified.

“It’s also worth remembering that IPO excitement doesn’t always translate into strong long-term returns.

“Historical data shows that while IPOs have often delivered strong first-day gains, the median US IPO from 1995 to 2025 was down 4.7 per cent one year after its first-day close and experienced a maximum drawdown of 48 per cent during its first year.

“SpaceX could prove to be one of the defining companies of the next decade.

“However, for long-term investors, the key takeaway is less about chasing IPO headlines and more about understanding how these events can affect the diversified funds they already own.”
