# ‘Broken’ sick note system to be overhauled in bid to boost economy

By Ruth Wilkinson — 2026-05-20

Ruth Wilkinson, head of policy at the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, said: “If Britain is to keep people healthy, productive and in work, then prevention and person-centred approaches must lead the way.

“The Government has to strengthen and widen access to occupational health systems if it’s to meet its target to reduce sickness absence, keep people in work and get them back to work.

“We need a clear, practical plan to transform workplace health in this country. Smart employers are already taking action, boosting productivity and keeping staff healthier at the same time. Bringing patients, the NHS and employers together to offer personalised support that keeps people in work, or helps them get back to the workplace, will be good for everyone and good for the economy.”
