# Package holiday demand helps boost easyJet profits

Aarin Chiekrie, equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said: “EasyJet’s full-year numbers landed slightly ahead of market expectations as the airline delivered another strong summer for sunseekers.

“The no-frills airline is doing a great job of growing its fleet and, on average, more of the available seats are being filled by jetsetters. That’s good news for investors.

“Given the high fixed costs associated with flying planes, keeping them as full as possible is key to profitability.

“Lower oil prices have been a big help on that front too, given they account for such a significant chunk of airlines’ costs.

“The package holiday arm delivered another period of impressive growth. Revenue grew at high double-digit rates, helping the division’s pre-tax profits expand to £250 million, or around a third of the group’s total.

“That means it’s already reached its medium-term profit target ahead of schedule, and the bar has been raised to £450 million by 2030.

“The outlook for the new year brought some mixed news. Winter losses are set to get worse, coming in around £30 million behind market expectations, as ongoing investment in its new strategic bases in Milan and Rome continues.

“Looking past this, management’s hoping to grow capacity by around 7 per cent this year, or nearly double the sector average, and first-half bookings are already tracking ahead of the prior year.

“With a net cash pile of over £0.6 billion, there’s also plenty of cushion if the market experiences some turbulence.”
