# UK has ‘ignored science on fish stocks collapse’ in 10 years since Brexit vote

By Hugo Tagholm — 2026-09-14

Hugo Tagholm, executive director at Oceana UK, has urged the government to act with fish stocks on the decline.

He said: “Overfishing is undermining our coastal communities and emptying our seas.

“Big fishing corporations are taking far more than their fair share – leaving almost nothing for ocean wildlife or local fishers.

“If this goes on we are going to start to see fish populations collapse, and with them whole marine food chains, devastating fishing communities up and down the country, and wildlife from puffins to porpoises.

“This autumn, international negotiations on catch levels will commence once again. The UK government must take this opportunity to set sustainable catch limits and stand up for the sea.”
