# Government has two weeks to deliver on energy support – charities

By Tessa Khan — 2026-05-12

Tessa Khan from Uplift, one of the signatories to the letter, said: “Labour must not repeat the mistakes of past governments that failed to prepare this country for soaring energy costs driven by overseas wars.

“Spending tens of billions propping up a broken fossil fuel system is not an answer, nor is more drilling when we know it won’t lower bills and the UK has already burned through most of its gas reserves.

“Instead, ministers must urgently scale up support for households to switch to clean energy and reforms to ensure they feel the savings.

“This government is going in the right direction, but clearly needs to go much further and faster to ensure everyone benefits. Now is not the time for half measures.

“The public appetite for real change is obvious: people are sick of high bills and fossil fuel profiteering, and record numbers are already turning to clean energy to power their homes and lives.

“Now the government must match that momentum with genuinely bold action on the UK’s switch to clean energy. This is not the moment to take their eye off the ball.”
