# A nation divided by energy savers and energy strugglers revealed in new research

By Robert Palmer — 2026-08-18

Robert Palmer, deputy director of Uplift, said: “Hard up Brits are dreading next week’s price cap announcement. This research shows almost a third of people are rationing their energy already because of cost.

“The good news is that UK renewable energy is now protecting some by replacing gas in our power system, because unlike gas, electricity prices haven’t spiked. We are seeing more people wanting to switch to solar power, heat pumps and electric cars to get off their reliance on volatile fossil fuels. But the government now needs to make it so everyone can benefit from homegrown, clean electricity as we are seeing a divide between the renewable ‘haves’ and ‘haves not’.

“And politicians can’t ignore the impact of fossil fuels on our climate as we battle an unprecedented summer of extreme heat. The transition to renewable energy needs to go faster and be available to all, with government help for those who cannot afford it. We need to see real change and we need to see it soon.”
