# £119bn savings maturity warning as millions of savers risk seeing returns almost halve

By Katie Horne — 2026-09-03

New figures from Skipton Building Society have revealed that more than £119 billion of UK savers’ savings are set to mature before year-end and those who fail to act could see their returns fall by up to 45 per cent.

Skipton has called this the start of ‘Maturity Season’ – a period when substantial portions of savers’ cash reach the end of their savings terms, requiring savers to decide where to put their money next.

Separate Skipton research suggests that many savers aren’t prepared to move their savings and a third of UK savers admit they do not understand the term ‘account maturity’.

Katie Horne, banks relationship manager at Flagstone, said: “Many people like taking advantage of long-term savings accounts that offer rates of interest on cash they can afford to lock away for many months or even years.

“Fixed-term saving accounts can be a hugely effective way to keep your money working hard when you don’t need to spend it.

“But, in the course of our busy lives, it’s not easy to keep tabs on when different fixed-term accounts are due to mature. Added to that, many of us forget to research the market upfront to ensure our savings move into new accounts upon maturity and keep growing.

“As a result, huge amounts of newly-matured savings roll over into non-interest-bearing accounts which over time erodes the value of the cash they hold.

“However, there are ways to earn more from your money without exerting huge effort. Cash platforms, for instance, allow you to keep track of your savings in one place and move money more easily between savings accounts. Platforms can be an effective way to ensure your money keeps working hard for you without requiring a lot of time or attention.

“Twelve months ago, it was widely assumed that interest rates would fall over the course of 2026. This hasn’t happened; in fact economists predict that the next Bank of England base rate decision could prompt interest rates upwards again. This is the recipe for a buoyant, competitive savings market.

“For those who take the time to do a little research, it’s not hard to find inflation-beating fixed-term and instant access savings accounts whatever your circumstances.”
