# Youth suicide prevention charity Papyrus closes

By Simon Gunning — 2026-09-08

Simon Gunning, chief executive officer of Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), is saddened by the news of youth suicide prevention charity Papyrus’ closure.

He said: “We are devastated by the news regarding Papyrus. They are a vital suicide prevention service offering critical support to under-35s – an age group for whom suicide remains the leading cause of death.

“Our thoughts are with the entire Papyrus team during this incredibly difficult time. We want to acknowledge and honour the extraordinary work they have done in youth suicide prevention, and the countless young lives they have saved.

“Our immediate priority, alongside our partners across the wider mental health sector, is working to address this urgent gap in crisis support in the UK.

“We urge anyone in need of support to reach out to the CALM suicide prevention helpline on 0800 58 58 58 (open daily, 5pm to midnight). For support outside of these hours, or for tailored support for those aged under the age of 18, please contact Samaritans, Shout, or NHS 111.

“To ensure no one is left without help, we have published a directory of support services at thecalmzone.net.”
