# Avoiding three things in middle age ‘linked to 13 extra years without dementia’

By Prof Ian Maidment — 2026-08-05

Prof Ian Maidment, professor in clinical pharmacy at Aston University, said: “This research adds to the evidence, from multiple studies, that what is good for the heart is good for the brain.

“To prevent, or delay the onset of dementia, we need to look after our physical health. This study found that not smoking, having blood pressure within the normal range and avoiding diabetes delayed the onset of dementia for over 10 years.

“We need to get the message out that following a healthy lifestyle, including exercise, alcohol in moderation in addition to the factors found in this research, can have a real impact on ‘brain health’ and protect against dementia.

“We also need to support people to live such a lifestyle.”
