# Use Minecraft in schools to teach children about built environment, peers say

David Barnes, Chartered Institute of Building’s head of policy and public affairs, said: “We welcome the House of Lords Built Environment Select Committee’s recognition of digital tools as a powerful method for engaging young people with the built environment.

“Our 2026 research found that 68% of young people across the UK hold a positive view of construction careers. The challenge now is turning that interest into action by providing clear pathways, and we believe digital tools can help bridge the skills gap.

“We have long championed innovative approaches to inspiring the next generation of construction professionals, including the launch of our ‘Craft Your Future’ campaign involving Minecraft back in 2016.

“The gamification of learning through platforms like Minecraft and The Sims allows us to engage with young people using familiar digital environments to spark curiosity about how places are designed, built and maintained.

“When combined with real-world learning and industry engagement, these tools can promote the range of fantastic construction careers available and help young people understand the impact the built environment has on everyday life.”
